Curriculum

Our aim at the Clare School is to organise the curriculum so that all our pupils may experience the National Curriculum, the Foundation Stage Curriculum or a Post 16 curriculum at a level appropriate to them. This also includes the additional curriculum which addresses those aspects of development which are not covered in the relevant levels of the National Curriculum, arising from the pupils’ complex needs, such as Mobility and Orientation skills.

Our curriculum is based on 2 levels which run alongside each other, a ‘formal’ level and a ‘pre-formal’ level. Depending upon the progress each pupil makes as they develop as learners there are opportunities for movement from one level to another.

Pupils working at the ‘pre-formal’ level work within the Foundation Stage (developmental) Curriculum Framework over all the Key-Stages, with subject material delivered at an age-appropriate level. From Key Stage 3 onwards pupils will also be working on the ASDAN (vocational) education programmes New Horizons, Transition Challenge and Towards Independence. Pupils working at the ‘formal’ level follow the National Curriculum subjects for their own or earlier Key Stages. From Key Stage 3 onwards pupils will also be working on appropriate ASDAN (vocational) education programmes such as Life Skills and Bronze Award.

The School consists of a main block containing all the Primary Department classrooms, many of the specialist rooms for the Secondary Department, a Performing Arts Studio, the Physiotherapy Department, Library, Soft Play Area, Staff Room and the Administration Area. There are also three separate buildings, one which houses the Sensory Support Centre, a second which contains the Sixth Form and a third which houses the Environmental Controls Room and is for therapy provision, accommodating the School Nurse, Speech Therapists and the Occupational Therapists. In addition there is a School Flat for independent living skills.
